How to Tell If Your Beads Are Ironed Correctly — A Beginner's Guide

Ironing is the step most beginners get wrong. The beads look fine on the surface, but one wrong move and your finished piece falls apart. Here's everything you need to know.


Common ironing mistakes and what they look like

Hollow beads (under-ironed)
The surface looks flat, but the inside didn't melt properly. It feels solid until you bend it — then it just crumbles apart. This happens when the temperature is too low or you didn't iron long enough.

Barely fused
The beads are only lightly bonded on the surface, gaps are still visible, and the piece pulls apart easily. Not strong enough to use as a keychain or pendant.

Mixed bead sizes
Different sizes or materials ironed together creates an uneven surface — the pixel look gets messy and the finished piece just looks off.

Dirty ironing paper
Ironing paper that's been used too many times gets rough, picks up residue, and leaves grey marks on your beads. If your finished piece looks dull or dirty, it's time to replace the paper.

Color bleeding
Too much heat combined with going back and forth leaves color bleeding outside the lines. The edges get blurry and the design loses its sharpness.

Melted beads
Maximum heat for too long completely deforms the beads. They lose their shape and that clean pixel look is gone.

The golden rule
Low heat, multiple passes. Change your ironing paper regularly. Keep bead sizes sorted separately. Don't rush and try to get it done in one go.


How to read your beads after ironing

Flip your piece over and look at the holes. Use this as your guide:

  • Center hole, no light coming through → under-ironed
  • Center hole, light coming through → under-ironed
  • Outer holes, light coming through → under-ironed
  • Outer holes, no light coming through → hollow bead (looks fused but isn't)
  • All holes, fully see-through → under-ironed
  • All holes, fully closed → temperature too high
  • All holes present, center partially see-through → temperature too high

The ideal result: outer holes partially closed, center hole fully closed, no light coming through anywhere.
